A Historic Hamilton Estate, Open for a Limited Pilot

Auchmar Estate is one of Hamilton’s most significant historic properties, located at 88 Fennell Avenue West on Hamilton Mountain.

Built in the 1850s for Isaac Buchanan, Auchmar is a rare surviving example of a nineteenth-century country estate, featuring its historic Gothic Revival manor, outbuildings, stone walls and surrounding grounds.

Since acquiring the estate in 1999, the City of Hamilton has been working to preserve the property and plan for its future. The City is currently developing a long-term plan to guide the future use, stewardship and activation of this unique landmark.

As part of that process, the City is currently piloting a variety of uses for Auchmar. This limited pilot provides an opportunity to carefully introduce appropriate creative, cultural and community activities to the property while the City continues planning for its long-term future.

The Auchmar Pilot
Auchmar will be available for approved uses Saturdays and Sundays in November and the first two weekends of December.
This pilot will help explore how the property can be thoughtfully used while respecting its historic character and the City’s ongoing planning process.
If the pilot is successful, we hope to explore continuing and expanding appropriate uses at Auchmar into 2027 and beyond.
All requests for access and use are considered case-by-case based on their suitability and alignment with the project objectives.
What to Expect
Auchmar is a historic property and is not currently operating as a traditional event or studio venue.
- Limited availability: Access is currently limited to the pilot dates and requires approval.
- City staff onsite: City staff will be onsite during approved uses.
- Clean and prepared spaces: The areas being used will be fully cleaned and prepared before activities.
- Outdoor washrooms: There are currently no washrooms inside the estate. Outdoor washrooms will be provided for guests.
- Heating: The space is heated.
- Signage: Appropriate signage will be provided throughout the areas being used.
- Respecting the property: All activities must be appropriate for the historic building and grounds, and users are expected to treat the property with care.
