Our Story

Mental health struggles are real, painful, and often invisible. It’s heartbreaking to watch someone you love fade away because they can’t get the help they need.

For over 20 years, my sister battled an eating disorder. On March 27, 2024, she lost that fight. The toll on her, and on our family, was immense. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she was in and out of the hospital every few days. We discovered that one of Ontario’s only government-funded rehab centers might not accept her because she was too sick. The only alternative was private care—at an overwhelming cost of $30,000 per month. No one should have to choose between getting help and overwhelming finances.

Our Mission

In the wake of this tragedy, my family and I are committed to turning our pain into purpose. That’s why we created the Smile and Laugh Foundation, a third-party initiative in partnership with the Brantford General Hospital Foundation. Our mission is to support BGH’s upcoming renovation, which includes a much-needed mental health wing. Of the $1.3 billion total cost, the hospital is responsible for $1.3 million for construction and $200 million for furniture and equipment—and they need our help to make it happen.
